Magic Bullet MBR-1701 17-Piece Express Mixing SetMagic Bullet MBR-1701 17-Piece Express Mixing Set

Taking up no more space on the counter than a coffee mug, this convenient mixing system replaces a food processor, blender, and coffee grinder. Keep it handy on the countertop for instant meals and snacks. The 17-piece set includes a high-torque power base with a stainless-steel cross blade and flat blade, a tall and a short bullet cup, four party mugs with colored lip rings, a shaker top and a steamer top, two stay-fresh re-sealable lids, plus a 100-page Magic Bullet "10 Second Recipe" book. Simple to operate, just load the ingredients into the short cup, the tall cup, or one of the four mugs. Twist on the cross or flat blade, place the bullet on the power base, and press down. The high-speed blender can do virtually any job in the kitchen in 10 seconds or less. To heat or chill, place the Magic Bullet cup or mug in the microwave, refrigerator, or freezer. All parts except for the power base clean up easily by hand or in the dishwasher. The blender measures approximately 4 by 4 by 10 inches and caries a one-year limited warranty.

Speak & SpellSpeak & Spell

It's always good to know where a band came from so you can see how far they've come. Speak and Spell is really the work of Vincent Clarke, who, with Andy Bell, would later form the happy-go-lucky pop-dance megaforce Erasure. And it shows in the catchy, upbeat songs "New Life," "Boys Say Go," "Photographic," and the most famous single, "Just Can't Get Enough." When Martin Gore took over the songwriting, Depeche Mode veered toward a different thematic direction by developing the goth-pop that would become their signature. Still, it's an important album not only because it is Depeche Mode's first but also because it is one of the best representations of early-'80s minimalist synth music. --Beth Bessmer

Blade 2Blade 2

The rap-rock-electronic collaboration has become a mainstay of the industry. Yet as cool as it is to hook up artists from disparate genres, sometimes these fusions look better on paper than they actually sound. Not so this project, which finds A-list rappers (Busta Rhymes, Bubba Sparxx, Rah-Digga, et al.) joining forces with topnotch electronica heavyweights like Crystal Method and Roni Size. There's much to dig here, but there are a few glaring missteps. Witness "Cowboy," in which the flamboyance of Fat Boy Slim's rubbery funk only underscores Eve's lyrical weaknesses. Also iffy is "Getting Aggressive," which reduces Mystikal to background noise underneath Moby's intrusive onslaught of rhythm. Better balance is found on Mos Def and Massive Attack's intense cover of Bad Brains' "I Against I"; a ghetto-fab but gritty partnership between Jadakiss, Fabolous, and Danny Saber; and Gorillaz and Redman's giddy "Gorillaz on My Mind." Credit everyone involved for delivering a soundtrack album that is much more than tie-in product. --Amy Linden
